During her teaching career, she finished a master's degree while studying In France and completed all but her dissertation in a Ph.D. program. She was an active member of the Kansas Foreign Language Association.
Those who knew her as a friend and colleague fondly remember Joy as a petite woman who seemed to be named for the French phrase "joie de vivre". With her great sense of humor, she truly spread joy wherever she went. Joy was an active woman who found time to play bridge, golf, and buzz around town In her little sports cars she purchased in Europe. She always found time to share a story or joke.
After her retirement from teaching in 1991, Joy and her husband, Gene (Hays High Class of 1940), moved to Mexico where they enjoyed an active retirement and served as advocates for the U.S. Consulate, helping American citizens with various problems. Her warmth and generosity will be sadly missed. Friends, colleagues, and former students are encouraged to help establish a living memorial for Joy by sending a contribution to the USD »4B9 Foundation with a notation for the Joy Bray Kent Scholarship. The mailing address is USD #489 Foundation, 323 W. 12th. Hays. Kansas 67601.
