Charles Harvey Mergele, 63, passed away Monday, May 8, 2006, at home surrounded by his family, after an extended battle with cancer.
Funeral: 1 p.m. Friday at Shannon Rufe Snow Funeral Chapel in Fort Worth. Interment will immediately follow in Bluebonnet Hills Memorial Park and will include a Masonic service. Viewing: noon Friday.

Memorials: In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the American Cancer Society for research of gastric cancer, 8100 Carpenter Freeway, Dallas, Texas 75247; or Community Hospice of Texas, Cleburne Branch, 6100 Western Place, Suite 500, Fort Worth, Texas 76107, whose caring staff helped so much in the final days.

Charles was born Sept. 9, 1942, in San Antonio. After graduating from Eastern Hills High School in Fort Worth, he served in the U.S. Marine Corps. He met his beautiful bride-to-be of 44 years, Dottie Dillon, in Memphis, Tenn., and they married Nov. 24, 1961. He retired in 1999 after 34 years at General Dynamics/Lockheed-Martin. He was a proud Mason and loved to travel the world, camp with his dear friends from the Dolphin RV Club and dote on his seven grandchildren. He had a lifelong thirst for knowledge. He will be profoundly missed by all who knew him. He was preceded in death by his mother, Kathern, and adoptive father, John. A highlight in the latter years of his life was reuniting with his birth father, Ed Klefforth, who survives him at age 85.

"Say not in grief, 'He is no more,' but live in thankfulness that he was."

Survivors: He was the loving husband of Dottie; proud father of son, Carl Mergele and his wife, Anna, daughter, Debbie Guiney and her husband, Paul, and son, Cary Mergele; and adoring grandfather of Taylor, Griffin, Ethan, Peyton, Garrett, Logann and Owen. He is also survived by his sister, Cindy Bunch and her husband, Don; niece, Stacy; great-nephew, Chase; great-niece Sidney; his sister-in-law, Pat Cole and her husband, Jim; his brother-in-law, Bill Dillon and his wife, Helen, and nephew Mark; his cousins, Dovie and Richard; and his brother, Donald.
