Bertha E. was born to Alexander and Eliza Ann (Shryer) Day in December of 1885 in Monroe County, Iowa. She migrated with her parents and siblings from Iowa to Chase County, Nebraska in the late 1880's. Bertha's siblings were: Sherman Day, James A. Day, Lewis F. (Louis) Day, John William "William" Day, Estella "Etta" Day, Charlie Day (d. young in Iowa), Mary Day, Walter Samuel Day and Ernest A. Day.
She married John T. Calkins on 16 November 1902 in Chase County, Nebraska. John was the son of Adeline and Asa M. Calkins. He was born in April 1868 in Indiana.
After their marriage, Bertha and John T. lived in Chase County, Nebraska with Asa M. Calkins (John's father) possibly living with them until his death. Asa is living with them on the April 1910 census and is listed as a widower. Bertha and John had six children in Nebraska, two of whom died young and four who lived: Raymond W. Calkins (b. abt. 1905), Emory A. Calkins (b. abt. 1908), Blanch V. Calkins (b. abt. 1911) and Harold Calkins (b. abt. 1913).
By March 1920 they were living in Yuma County, Colorado where John was farming. They had one more child while living in Colorado - Paul E. Calkins (b. abt. 1921). They then migrated to Payette County, Idaho where they were working on a fruit farm in April of 1930.
