Aviation Electronics Technician 2nd Class, Richard Thomas Abell, US Navy, died after an accident while in port in Naples, Italy.

Born in Nigeria to missionary parents, Richard was raised in Texas. It was there he met and married his wife on 7 January 1977 in Dallas.

He soon enlisted in the Navy to be an avionics technician. After navy basic training, he attended navy avionics schools in Millington, Tennessee with follow on training on the SH-2 Sea Sprite helicopter @ Naval Air Station Norfolk in Virginia.

While in Tennessee his wife gave birth to a daughter.

He was promoted to AT2 in January 1980. At the time of his death, Petty Officer Abell was on his first Mediterranean Deployment, part of the helicopter detachment of HSL-32 aboard a navy destroyer.

He was survived by his wife, daughter, unborn son, his parents, and siblings John C. Abell III, David A. Abell, and Betty Abell.
