Beloit's senior citizen - Mrs. A.H. Van Tassel - died Saturday afternoon at Beloit Hospital, where she was admitted for care the previous evening. Had she lived to June 20, she would have been 105 years old.
It was on that date in 1864 that she was born, the daughter of Samuel Hersey Jr. and Prudence Talcott Hersey, the youngest child of Capt. William Talcott, who in 1835 migrated from Rome, N.Y., to Rockton, Ill. Thus Harriet Hersey Van Tassel shared the heritage of two pioneer families of the Stateline area.
In her youth, she lived on the west side of Rockton Road, north of Rockton. After the death of her father, her mother moved to Beloit so that Harriet could attend high school here. They moved into a residence at 824 Church St., which haf been her home since.
She was married to Amos H. Van Tassel of Durand, a college student of the Class of 1887, who had roomed in the house. Mr. Van Tassel, who was a journalist, died in 1938.
In 1962, Mrs. Van Tassel was honored at the 125th anniversary of the First Congregational Church as the member of longest standing. She also has been a member of the Historical Society and the Federation of Women's Clubs. She also was a member of the Coerie and Current Literature Club.
Surviving are two nephews, Ralph E. Hersey of Venice, Fla., and Arthur Hersey of New York, and a niece, Mrs. Roy Graves of Rockford.
Services will be held at the First Congregational church at 3 p.m. Tuesday. There will be no visitation.
