The eldest son of Bryon Kilbourn and his second wife, Henrietta Karrick Kilbourn was born in Milwaukee. WI. He studied at an Episcopal preparatory in Connecticut. He went on to Yale as an undergraduate, and later studied medicine in Chicago and Louisville. He had a commission of LT during the Civil War, and served with the Third Wisconsin, where he saw action in Virginia, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, and Georgia. After the war, he managed a coffee plantation in Guatemala until one of the innumerable political revolutions made it expedient for citizens of the United States to leave. After receiving his MD he practiced in Milwaukee for a few years until he retired to his estate at North Lake, WI, which he named "Hawkhurst" after the Kilbourne's ancestral home in Kent, England. He became a country gentleman and a active member of St. Peter's Episcopal Church at North Lake providing generous financial support, and served as a lay reader. Dr. Kilbourne married Mary Shears, daughter of North Lake pioneer, Henry Shears, builder of the first flour mill at North Lake in 1847. Dr. Kilbourne fathered three daughters, all born in Wisconin. Maude Alice, born Mar 27, 1864, Henrietta M. and Mary B., twins born on Feb. 19, 1867. Henrietta married Arthur L. Kennedy; no death or burial information available for him. Henrietta died April 24, 1945. Maude married Abbott Thorndike; born Aug 5, 1870, and died August 21, 1935. Maude died June 9, 1936 in Milwaukee. Mary died Sept. 7, 1945 only months after Henrietta. Byron Kilbourn dropped the letter "e" from his name. Dr. Kilbourne resumed the use of the letter.
