Chestina Scales was the second wife of John Francis Rague.

Chestina met recently divorced architect John Francis Rague at Janesville, WI. She was a young artist and many years Rague's junior.

Their courtship was strongly opposed by Chestina's Episcopalian family. Her family opposed marriage to a divorced man.

Chestina became Rague's second wife when they were married by a Congregationalist minister.

Shortly after their marriage in Wisconsin, the couple came to Dubuque, IA where Rague expanded his architectural career.

John Francis Rague began losing his eyesight in 1862, and eventually went blind. During his illness, Chestina supported them with art embroidery, and a lace and fancy sewing shop. She was also an agent for Florence Sewing Machines.

She was assisted in caring for her husband by his first wife, Eliza M. Rague St. Clair of Sangamon County, IL. Now the remains of all three rest in Linwood Cemetery, Dubuque, IA.

MRS. J. F. RAGUE. The 1873-74 Dubuque City Directory listed 151 and 153 Main for this Florence sewing machine agent.

The 1874-1875 through 1880 Dubuque City Directory stated that this business was located at 725 Main.

Mrs. C. S. Rague remains listed in the 1909 Dubuque City Directory under "Art Embroidery."
