John H. Adams, a resident of Greenville for more than 65 years & 1 of the oldest residents in the city, passed away at his home, 220 N. Secord St. at 4:10 a.m. Sunday. Mr. Adams had been in failing health for 7 weeks, suffering from a kidney condition & general complications. Mr. Adams observed his 90th birthday at his home here on 01Nov.
Funeral services have been arranged for 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Greenville Presbyterian church, the Rev. R. Frank Mitchell, the pastor, officiating. Interment will be at Montrose cemetery. The Dewey & Son Mortuary is in charge.
John Henry Adams, son of E. M. & Marion (Hannah) Adams, was born on a farm near Danville, VA, near the WV state line, 01Nov1852 & was aged 90 years & 3 months, lacking a day. With his family he moved to Leaksville, NC in 1859, residing there until 11Oct1877 when he came to Greenville. Two years later he was united in marriage to Miss Mary Reavis of this city, who with 2 daughters, Miss Margaret & Mrs. Lutie Adams Sampson, have preceded him in death, the latter having passed away 13Nov last. The late Reid Dare made his home with the Adams family for many years. Mr. Adams' second marriage was to Mrs. Katherine B. Riley of this city, 10Jun1923 & she & 5 step-children survives. They are Clayton E. Riley, Mrs. Elvin M. Miller, Mrs. J. H. McHenry & Mrs. Roy Wilson of this city & Mrs. E. H. Koch of Highland. Mr. Adams is the last of a family of 11 children.
Mr. Adams came to Greenville 11Oct1877, & operated a hotel here for many years, known as The Adams House, now the Greenville Hotel. He also operated a livery & feed barn in connection with the hotel for over 35 years. A lover of good horses, he always had them in his stable & his rigs were eagerly sought after, especially on Sunday, when the gay young blades would take their lady friends out for a ride. He was an expert horseman, & enjoyed greatly riding or driving a spirited animal. Mr. Adams was the dean of parade marshals in Greenville & had headed every parage in this city for many years, his last appearance as a parade marshal being in Sep1941, during the Farmers Institute & Fair. Mr. Adams carried his years lightly, & those not aware of his age would take him for a man many years younger. He had always enjoyed vigorous health until the spring of 1941 when he submitted to an operation.
Mr. Adams was a member of the Greenville Presbyterian church & was a regular attendant as long as his health permiteed. He was well known because of his long residence here, & had many friends throughout the Co. He was an avid reader & kept abreast of the times through this means. Though 90 years of age his erect bearing, his keen eye, & a grip in his handclasp that would suggest he had many less years behind him, he was "the best man for his age in the Co."
