OBITUARY OF WILLIAM "BILL" MATHEWS
(sullivan Indiana Newspaper)

William "Bill" Mathews, 85 years old, of this city, died Wednesday morning at the Mary Sherman hospital here. He was a lifelong resident of this county and was a member of the United Mine Workers of America.

Surviving are a son, Claude Mathews
of Tucson, Arizona; a brother, Levi of Pimento; a stepdaughter, Mrs. John Jones of Toledo, Ohio and a stepson, Joseph Myers of Des Moines, Iowa.

Funeral services will be held Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Alexander Funeral Home, with Rev. Jack Anderson officiating, and burial will be in Mt. Zion cemetery at New Lebanon.

His first wife was Lucy Wilkey Mathews
They were married July 3, 1890. Lucy died October 30, 1900. To their union it is believed there were five children born. Three children died as infants, only Clifford, who died about age 25 and Claude lived 87 years, lived beyond childhood.

William married again on November 02, 1902 in Sullivan County Indiana to widow Julia A. Trinkle Woodard who was the widow of William Thomas Woodard. Julia died July 25, 1909. Although Julia was the mother of about ten children, no children were born within the marriage to William Mathews.

Then William was married to Lillie T. Breedlove on October 26, 1912.
One child,Golda, was born to this union.

At his death, his surviving children were listed as Claude Mathews of Tucson, stepdaughter Mrs. John Jones of Toledo and stepson Joseph Myers of Des Moines Iowa.

His brothers were Levi, John, and Francis.
His father was William Mathews (Sr.) and his mother was Leona Crabb-Mathews. According to hand-written notes of Claude Mathews, William Mathews (Sr.), disappeared sometime after 1875 and headed for Rockport Kentucky to find work. However, he was never heard of again. This left Leona Crabb-Mathews with small children to care for and raise on her own.

His last name has been spelled Matthews; and Mathies, and probably other ways. However, our family has traditionally has spelled our name MATHEWS and is spelled that way today.
