Azel Smith, 73, who made his home with his niece, Mildred Holmes, of Walnut Street, Daniels, died Thursday at 10:30 a.m. in a Beckley hospital after a long illness. Born July 20, 1912, at Beckley, he was the son of the late Canady and Roxie Jane Prince Smith. Mr. Smith was a retired plumber for Maxwell & Keyser Plumbing and Heating in Beckley.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Margie Smith, on June 8, 1961; a brother, Harmon Smith, and two sisters, Rachel Holmes and Myrtle Griffith. Survivors include a daughter, Jane Ellen Deaven of Curwensville, Pa.; a brother, Terry Smith of Glen Morgan; four sisters, Lottie Garten of Atlantic Beach, Fla., Sadie Keyser of Beckley, Margie Vandall of Stafford, and Eva Meadows of Bradley, and three grandchildren.

Services will be Sunday at 2:30 p.m. at the Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel in Beckley with the Rev. Blair Wallace officiating. Burial will be in the Sunset Memorial Park at Beckley. Pallbearers will be Robert and Basil Holmes, Larry and Lonny Smith, Donald and Lawrence Griffith.
