"ONE OF COUNTY's PIONEER CITIZENS CLAIMED BY DEATH
"Mr. James Tucker Passes at Age of 85 -- Funeral at Bridge Creek Church.

"Mr. James Tucker, known affectionately to his host of friends as "Uncle Jimmie" Tucker, one of Colquitt's pioneer citizens and a member of one of the county's largest and best known families, died at his home in West Moultrie Monday afternoon at the age of 85.

"Mr. Tucker had been in feeble health for sometime but was confined to his bed only a short while. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at Bridge Creek and interment was in the cemetery there.

"He is survived by several children, a number of grandchildren and a large number of other relatives.

"Mr. Tucker was the son of the late Crawford Tucker of this county and was one of thirty-two children, all of whom are dead except one. His father, who was a Primitive Baptist Elder, was born in this county [sic] in 1801 [sic], and died in 1883. He is said to have captained a company of troops fighting the only battle ever fought on Colquitt soil. This skirmish occurred in 1838 near Little River and was with a band of wandering Indians. It is claimed that about six white men and twenty Indians were killed in the skirmish.

"The elder Mr. Tucker was married three times and the late Mr. James Tucker was one of the children by the third [sic] marriage. All thirty-two [sic] of the brothers and sisters grew to manhood and womanhood and were married, except one girl who died from burns at the age of 17."

Obituary published in The Weekly Moultrie Observer, Friday, March 6, 1936 (page 1.) (Please note that year of birth is an estimate, based on age at the time of U.S. Census enumerations, and on age at death.)
