Robert A. Hessler, 47, apparently informed family members of his advanced cancer. Rather than suffer indignities of treatment processes available at the time, he decided to hike into the mountains of Baker County, Oregon on October 1, 1988, to die. His body was never found.

He married Kathryn Anne O'Hearn on February 24, 1962, in Los Angeles, California and were later divorced. He married Elizabeth Ann Winkler on July 30, 1976, in Huntsville, Alabama. They were the parents of Joel. He lived in Alabama, California, Florida, and Wisconsin before moving to Oregon.
Surviving are his wife, Elizabeth; one son, Joel Hessler; one brother, Richard (Tina) Hessler; his step-mother, Thelma Hessler; one aunt, Helen (Kenneth) Reeve; and several cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one half-brother, Mark Hessler and one uncle, Robert Hessler.
