William T. Smith, 74, of Monmouth, Illinois, died at St. Francis Medical Center.

Born the son of Benjamin F. and Flora Thurlby Smith. On September 8, 1956 he married Virginia A. Pate in Monmouth.

Mr. Smith worked at Midwest Manufacturing in Galesburg for 30 years. he retired in 1994.

He was reared and educated in Galesburg and atteneded Galesburg Schools. He was a U.S. Army veteran and served in the infantry during the Korean War. He also served as a Shop Steward for the International Associates of Machine Aerospace Workers union local 2063. He was an avid Cubs fan. He loved music and played the piano. He enjoyed working in his yard.

Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Danita Ortery, Debra Helms, and Paula Schaumlefel, all of Monmouth; three grandchildren; one adopted granddaughter; one great-granddaughter; two sisters, Pat Hanaghan of Galesburg and Betty Valdez of Del Rio, Texas; three brothers, James Smith and Robert Smith, both of Galesburg, and Wayne Smith of San Antonio, Texas; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, four sisters, and two brothers.

A memorial service was held at Turnbull Funeral Home in Monmouth. There was a military service and dispersing of ashes at Lenox Union Cemetery in rural Warren County.
