His arrangement which led to the murder of his wife Maria Marshall on September 7, 1984, for the purpose of collecting a $1.5 million dollar life insurance policy, resulted in the bestselling book "Blind Faith" (1989, by Joe McGinnis). Additionally, a TV-movie adaption of the same title which starred Robert Urich and Joanna Kerns aired in 1990. A story in which Marshall described to investigators as a robbery resulting in Maria being shot to death at a location on the Garden State Parkway unraveled and it was revealed that he hired a hit man to kill his wife. Marshall was convicted and initially sentenced to death. However in 2006, the sentence was changed to 30-years to life. He was to be brought before a parole board shortly before his death caused by complications from a stroke.
