John M. Abel, 89, of Lansford, died April 26, 2009 in his residence. He was the husband of the late Tomasina T. (Leanza) Abel, who died in 2000. Born in Lansford, he was the son of the late August and Catherine (Mikulka) Abel. He was self employed with his brother, August, in the dry cleaning business called Band Box Cleaner, Lehighton. He was a member of St. Katharine Drexel Roman Catholic Church, Lansford. He was a World War II Army veteran. Survivors: Two daughters, Kathryn Pogwist and her husband, John, of Collegeville and Jessica Mitchell, with whom he resided; three brothers, August Abel of Lehighton, Rudolph Abel of Hometown and Stephen Abel and his wife, Antionette, of Morrisville, N.J.; granddaughter, Johnna Kathryn Pogwist. He was preceded in death by a sister, Anna Ball and a brother, Joseph Abel. Services: Mass of Christian Burial, noon Saturday, May 2, 2009 in St. Katharine Drexel Roman Catholic Church. Calling hours from 5-7:30 p.m. Friday evening and 10-10:30 a.m. Saturday morning in his residence, 513 E. Ridge Street, Lansford. Military interment, St. Michaels Cemetery, Summit Hill. Skrabak-Parambo Funeral Home, Lansford, is in charge of arrangements.
