Learned to fly in Winston Salem and began a 33 year career with Piedmont Airlines. Loved Flying and was an avid fisherman.
He and his wife, Betty, established Jesus Ministries in Wilmington, N.C.
He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Betty Harris Barnes, his three daughters and two sons-in-law, Darlene Barnes of Wilmington, N.C., Jewell and William D. Griffin, Jr. of Fort Mill, S,C., and Brenda and John McEntee of Wilmington, N.C. his sister, Mildred Carroll of Winston-Salem., N.C.; four grandchildren, Amanda Kubes and Alicia Johnson, both of Wilmington, N.C. and Sarah and Rachel Griffin, both of Fort Mill, S.C. Mr. Barnes was preceded in death by a son, Bert Randall "Randy" Barnes, Jr. in 1969.
