BUCKSPORT – Benjamin B. Blodget, 86, died peacefully on January 28, 2015, at Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor. He was born January 27, 1929, in Bucksport at the family home, the son of G. Laurence and Hazel (Mitchell) Blodget.
He attended Bucksport schools and Phillips Andover Academy. He graduated from Husson College, Bangor, in 1956, and from the Hartford Seminary of Religious Education in 1969. He enlisted in the U.S. Naval Reserve in 1947 and in the U.S. Coast Guard in 1949, transferring to Reserve Status following three and a half years of active duty. He retired in 1989 with 41 years of total service. He was a Life Member of the Reserve Officer’s Association of the U.S. He was employed by the U.S. Government between 1960 and 1981, being posted overseas as a Telecommunications Officer. During assignments, he also served as Director of Christian Education at several international English-speaking churches. After returning to the family home in Bucksport, he was active on the Division of Christian Education and Outdoor Ministries Committee of the Maine Conference, United Church of Christ. He was a fifty-year member of the Elm Street Congregational Church in Bucksport and served several area churches in their Sunday School programs and as an occasional lay preacher. He was Past Master of the Felicity Lodge #19 A.F. & A.M., Bucksport, as were his great-uncle and father. His great-grandfather was also a member of the same lodge. Benjamin was known in the Amateur Radio community by the call W1VEH. He was a member of the Maine Seagull Net and Pine Cone Chapter of the Quarter Century Wireless Association. Continuing family involvement with the Buck Memorial Library, he was a fourth generation member of the Board of Trustees, serving as Chairman for 22 years. He also served as Clerk-Treasurer of the Oak Hill Burial Place Association. He was a member of the Bucksport Historical Society.
Benjamin is survived by his beloved wife of 57 years, Jeannette (Stevens) Blodget of Bucksport; four children, Alison Willing and husband Carl of Temple, ME, Ann Blodget-Savageau and husband John of Shrewsbury, MA, Thomas L. Blodget and wife Pamela of Mt. Penn, PA, and Charles S. Blodget of Revere, MA; his sister-in-law, Electra Blodget of Easton, ME; his brother-in-law, Howard “Buzz” Stevens of Trenton, ME; five grandchildren, Meghan Willing, Jean-Luc Savageau, Rachel Savageau, Jay Blodget, and Lindsay Blodget; as well as several nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his sister-in-law, Laurie Stevens of Trenton, ME and his brother, John R. Blodget of Easton, ME.
He will be greatly missed.
