Solomon Cluett served in Company A. 51st Illinois Infantry and in Company B. 5th U.S. Veteran Volunteer Infantry in the Civil War.

He enlisted in Chicago, IL., on Sep 20, 1861 and was mustered into Co. A 51st IL. Infantry for 3 years service on Dec 24, 1861. He was described as 38 years old, 5' 10" tall with light hair, blue eyes, and light complexion. a married gardener born in Guernsey, England. He was discharged on completion of his enlistment at Decatur, AL. on Jan 16, 1865. On March 21, 1865 he enlisted at Chicago for 1 years service in Company B. 5th U.S. Veteran Volunteer Infantry and served until March 21, 1866, when his enlistment expired.

During his service, his regiment took part in most of the battles of the western army, losing 90 out of 209 men engaged at the Battle of Chickamauga, and 2 officers and 54 men killed an wounded at the Assault on Kennesaw Mountain, and at Franklin they lost 58 killed and wounded in the last great battle against Hood's Confederate Army.

The 1870 census of Chicago lists Solomon as a City of Chicago Policeman with wife Elizabeth and children Alice 14, Charles 12, Frank 11, and Lizzie 4. They had two other sons Henry H., and John C. who were not residing with them.

In the 1880 census of Chicago, Solomon is listed as a 56 year old policeman born in England in 1824 residing with his wife Elizabeth age 55 born in Guernsey, England and their children: Alice age 23 born in Guernsey, England, Albert 25 born in NY., Charles 23 and Lillie 14 both born in IL.

On April 29, 1887 Solomon received an Army Invalid Pension and following his death, his wife Elizabeth received an Army Widows Pension.

He was a member of Post #5, Grand Army of the Republic in Chicago, IL.

When Solomon died on June 7, 1888 in Cook County, IL., his death certificate stated he was 65 years old, married, and born in England in 1823. He was buried at Rose Hill Cemetery.
