Former Owner of Leslie’s Weekly, Noted Sportsman, Long Ill of Coast.
LOS ANGELES, Dec., 31 (AP).— William J. Arkell, former publisher of Leslie's Weekly and Judge, and a prominent sportsman of the nineties is dead here after a long Illness. He was seventy-two. Arkell sold his magazines in 1905 and ten years ago came to California from New York for his health. After quitting the publishing business he became head of the G. Washington Coffee Company and also had extensive mining interests in Montana and Nevada. During his residence in New York, he maintained a large racing stable and was identified with numerous sport enterprises. His friends said he once won a wager of $150,000 on a single horse race. He will be buried next Tuesday at Canajoharie, N.Y., which was his birth place. Arkell is survived by a son, James; a daughter, Mrs. Margarita Warner, both of Los Angeles; his brother, Bartlett Arkell of New York, and a sister, Mrs. Frank Barbour of Canajoharie.
