Virginia Meisner, age 93 of Hettinger, passed away on Wednesday, March 4, 2015 at Western Horizons Care Center in Hettinger.

Her Memorial Service will be Monday, March 9, 2015 at 1:00 p.m. at the Centennial Chapel of Evanson Jensen Funeral Homes in Hettinger, ND. Rev. Kathleen Dettmann will officiate and burial of Virginia's ashes will follow at the Hettinger Cemetery.

Virginia Marie Olson was born June 1, 1921 at White Deer, SD to I. Martin Olson and Charlotte (Dorsett) Olson. She lived on a farm south of Keldron, SD until she was 6 years old when the family moved to Haynes, ND.

When Virginia was 16 her Mother died shortly after giving birth to a daughter, who was stillborn. She became the Mom to two brothers who were 14 and 12 years old and her sister, who was 6 years old. The school excused Virginia every Monday so she could stay home and wash clothes. That was the only day they had electricity for the washing machine and iron. Her Mom had taught her to cook, bake bread and clean house.

In school she played girls basketball, was in class plays, took speech class and won first and second place, took a year of French language and studied a lot of math.

She graduated in 1940 from Haynes High School third in her class. After graduation she worked at the Auditor’s office in the Adams County Court House on a government project that President Roosevelt started. She and a friend in the Tax Department rented a room across the street from work. She also did typing for the Haynes school paper until she got married.

While working at the Court House she met Earl Meisner, who worked at the Texaco station. As she was engaged to another man, she refused his first three date invitations. Her girlfriend said Earl was such a nice guy and it would be just a date, “I didn’t have to marry him”. She did break her engagement and married Earl on January 3, 1942 at Baker, MT.

Her dad, Martin, went to work in the shipyards out west and her 2 brothers joined the Navy during the war. Earl and Virginia took her sister, Deloris, into their home to live until she graduated from Hettinger High School and Beauty College.

The Meisner home was a gathering for many holidays and picnics after the 4th of July parades. Earl and Virginia lived in their home on Main Street for 54 years. Earl entered Hillcrest Care Center, the house was sold and Virginia moved to Western Horizons Assisted Living facility. Virginia worked at Halverson’s Super Valu, J.C. Penney, the Hettinger Hospital and the Adams County Library. Both Earl and Virginia operated the Knotty Pine Drive Inn for one season --- one season was enough for them!

Earl and Virginia belonged to a bowling team and two card clubs. They both were active in the Hettinger Lutheran Church. Virginia took a Bethel Bible class and taught Confirmation class. She also belonged to the Ladies Aid in Haynes and the VFW in Colorado.

Virginia and Earl took care of many relatives over the years. A niece and nephew lived with them for two summers as their Mother was ill. She went to Denver to care for their Mother also. They cared for Deloris’ three boys when she was ill with MS. They also took care of Earl’s nephew 5 days a week for 5 years, while his Mother worked. Virginia’s Dad also lived with them. Earl’s Dad and brother stayed at their home a lot.

Virginia was an accomplished painter. She sold many paintings and several relatives have her paintings. She was also an excellent seamstress, sewing many clothes for her daughters and granddaughter. She was famous for her caramel rolls, buns, chicken and dumplings and sour cream chocolate cake.

Earl and Virginia had three children, all who survive her. Myrna (Terry) Gravning, Hettinger; Charlotte (Harry) Tatro, Mandan, ND; Earl “Lynn” Meisner, Longmont, CO. There are six grandchildren – Greg Gravning, Hettinger; Brian (Libby) Gravning, Hettinger; Michael (Trina) Tatro, Gilcrest, CO; Teryl Tatro (Wade Cole), Rosebud, MT; John Meisner (friend Airon Ermatinger), Longmont, CO; Cristine (Michael) Ginocchio, Mead, CO. She also has eight great grandchildren – Gabriel (Stephanie) Gravning, Mandan, ND; Amanda Gravning, Bismarck, ND; Jacob Rick, Browerville, MN; Paige Gravning (friend Brandon Byler), Ellinwood, KS; Kaycee Schwind, Hettinger, ND; D’Angelo and Davante’ Wright, Mead, CO; Max Tatro, Gilcrest, CO. and two great, great grandchildren Abram Gravning, Mandan, ND and Madalynn Byler, Ellinwood, KS. Three nephews Ronald (Janise) Dorman, David (Laura) Warbis and Joseph Olson and one niece Mary Ellen (Larry) Burke.

Preceding Virginia in death were her husband, Earl; her parents, her brothers Robert and Glen; sisters Ellen and Deloris and one nephew Alan Warbis.
