Phillip Abbott, 83, of Mesa, Arizona, passed away January 6, 2015, at the Mi Casa Nursing Center with family by his side. He was born January 23, 1931, to James and Lucille Abbott on a farm near Eagle Grove, Iowa and baptized in the United Methodist Church.

He attended rural schools until March of 1943 when the family moved to Eagle Grove. He graduated from high school in 1948 and Eagle Grove Junior College in 1951.

He joined the Iowa National Guard in 1947 and enjoyed a career of 38+ years, attaining the rank of Colonel in 1981. He retired from the Guard in 1986 with many awards.

He was united in marriage with Joyce DeRaad on December 13, 1953. They moved to the family farm in 1954 to focus on raising livestock, as well as grain production. In 1975, he quit raising livestock to devote more time to service in the Guard.

He helped with Little League, served on the Wright County Extension Council, the Woolstock Mutual Telephone Company and the Farmers Coop of Woolstock. Over the years he enjoyed fishing, golf, traveling in their RV, playing cards and watching the Iowa Hawkeyes with family and friends. They retired from farming in 1994.

From 1996-2010 they spent winters in Arizona, permanently moving there in 2011. He was diagnosed with multiple myeloma in June 2011.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, James Jr. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Joyce and his daughter, Pamela both of Mesa, AZ; Sisters-in-law, Audrey Dominick (Gene) and Barbara Peterson; Brother-in-law, Don Juffer and many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held in Arizona, Saturday, January 17, 2015.
