Mr. Hicks was a certified Trinity House pilot that had gone on board the imperiled American schooner Thomas W. Lawson in an effort to persuade her captain to get the giant ship underway and avoid being thrown onto the rocks. This failed and the ultimately seventeen men, including Pilot Hicks were killed. Hicks' body was not able to be identified and was buried along with the remains of fifteen other crewman from the Lawson who were also not able to be identified.
