Fenton was married to Della D Bradshaw. He lived in Baffle, Southampton County, Virginia, and was appointed U.S. Postmaster there on 22 Jul 1914. He became the father of Virginia's future First Lady, Katherine Thomas Beale Godwin, in January 1917. He registered for the draft on 5 June 1917 in Southampton County, VA. Sadly, both he and his wife died the same day in the flu epidemic in October of 1918, leaving little Katherine to be raised by an aunt and uncle, Emory and Bernice Beale.
