Maxwell Centennial Book, 1883-1983, published by Walsworth, Marceline, MO., page 188 – “Minear’s Barber Shop has been in business in Maxwell under the same name for 64 years. Glen Minear (Skinny) was born north of Collins in 1895. He started working in Charles Sander’s shop in Collins shining shoes when he was thirteen years old. He shined shoes for ten cents and at the time haircuts were a quarter. It was in that shop that he learned how to barber. Glen came over to Maxwell and bought the present shop from Hugh Olinger in 1918. The building was only three years old at that time. The following year, in 1919, his brother Harley, who had gone to Iowa Barber College in Des Moines for six weeks, bought an interest in the shop. The brothers barbered together until in the 1940’s when Glen went to Nevada and barbered in the Circle Shop for 20 years. The Minear brothers taught the barber trade to their brother, Cliff Minear; their brother-in-law, Jim Rock; and also to Jim Stone of Nevada and Blacky Fair. Ted, Harley’s son, went to Barber College in 1945 and started to work in his father’s shop in 1947 where he continued to work for about 15 years. After Ted quit barbering, Harley was again alone in the shop. Glen retired in 1960 at the age of 65; however in 1965 he started helping Harley pat time. Harley owned the shop until his death in 1975. It was then that Glen bought the shop again and he still owns it. The shop is open four days a week and Glen, at the age of 87, is always there. At one time there were four barber shops in Maxell, but now Minear’s is the only one. Jackie Minear, wife of Harley’s grandson Theodore, also has a beauty shop in the building at the present time. Glen likes to garden and can be seen riding his small cycle to and from work in warm weather. He is the only Minear living of his family of three brothers and three sisters.”
