CHARLES HARRISON LEWIS Charles Harrison Lewis, aged 81, died 25 November 2004 at Riverside Community Hospital in Riverside, California. Never fully recovering from a six-way heart by-pass in November 2003 and complications of diabetes and kidney failure. Charles was born 10 September 1923 on the Union Oil Lease in Brea-Olinda. The third son of George E. and Eva Della (Fleenor) Lewis. He is survived by his children, Shirlee Lewis, Anaheim, Michael Lewis, Chino Valley, AZ, Brian Lewis, Corona and Susie Lewis Struckhoff, La Mirada. Three granddaughters and four great grandchildren. Also surviving him, a brother, Cecil Lewis of San Clemente and sister, Jeanne Hagerman of Riverside. He is predeceased by his wife, Dolores, who died of cancer in 1999, and three brothers, Stanley, Harold and Roger Lewis. Charles went to grade school in Brea and Norwalk. Attended Excelsior High School for two years and then moved to Fullerton, where he graduated from Fullerton Union High School and continued his higher education at Fullerton Junior College, Vallejo Junior College and Rice University of Texas. He served his country during World War II in the US Army Air Corps, enlisting as a glider pilot and later trained at the Santa Ana Army Air Base as an Aviation Cadet and at Luke Field, he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant and assigned to ATC for twin engine training. During WWII, he was stationed in Mohanbari, India (CBI Theater), where he successfully completed 102 trips over the "Aluminum Trail." On 26 June 1943, Charles was united in marriage to Dolores Janice McClary, at Capilla de San Antonio Wedding chapel of Anaheim. They were married 56 years. Charles met Dolores, shortly after he saw her on the corner of Harbor and Commonwealth where he wolfed called her out front of the Wilkerson Drug Store. He was posing as a gorgeous redhead and that was all it took. He admits that his ten cent purchase of henna was the best decision he ever made. After the war, he returned to civilian life, but his love of flying drew him back to the military. Stationed in Vallejo, Texas, England and Ohio. In 1964, after 20 years of active duty he retired and came home to Fullerton. Charles started his second career as a programmer with the Riverside County Data Processing Department and retired as a Senior Programmer in 1981. Charles and Dolores led a full and rewarding life making many life long friendships all over the world. Active in Antique Auto Club, CBIVA, Classic Thunderbird Club of Southern California, The Hump Pilots Assn., The Inland Empire Classic Thunderbirds and after Dolores passed away, he became an honorary member of the Anaheim Union High School, Class of '42. Never an idle person, he took up upholstery in retirement, an avid reader in his later years and had a great love of gardening. His home in Riverside is landscaped with gardenias, irises, roses and many fruit trees. His fondest memory was when he rode the Great White Steamer to Catalina for only a dollar and his favorite food was ice cream. Memorial services will be held at the Riverside National Cemetery, 22495 Van Buren Blvd., Riverside, (951) 653-8417, on Monday, 13 December 2004 at one o'clock, Staging Area 5. LEWIS, CHARLES H. Passed away November 25, 2004 in Riverside, CA at the age of 81 years. Born September 10, 1923 in Brea O'Linda, CA. Mr. Lewis joined the Air Corps in 1942 and took training to become a pilot. Becoming a Second Lt. he was stationed in India where he completed 102 missions over the Hump, from India to China. He was discharged in 1946. Charles married Dolores Janice McClary in 1943 and they raised four children. Mr. Lewis re-enlisted in the Air Force in 1948 and was later recalled as a ast Lt. during the Korean Conflict. He retired in Nov. 1964 after 20 years active duty. Charles returned to school to learn computer programming and became the Sr. Computer programmer for Riverside County, writing the Riverside County Tax Program that is used today. After retiring in 1981 he worked on his hobbies of old cars and upholstery work. He belonged to the Antique Auto Club, CBIVA, Classic Thunderbirds of CA., Hump Pilots Association and the Inland Empire Classic Thunderbirds. Mr. Lewis is survived by his loving children, Shirlee Lewis, Susie Lewis Struckhoff, Michael and Brian Lewis. Dear brother of Jeanne Hagerman and Cecil Lewis. Devoted grandfather of three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Memorial Services will be conducted Dec. 13, 2004 at 1 P.M. in Riverside National Cemetery, Staging Area No. 1.
