Albert J. Rossi

On March 5th, Dr. Albert J. Rossi passed away in Stuart, FL where he lived for the past 33 years. He is survived by his wife Ruth after 60 years of marriage. He is also survived by his daughters Pamela Malley of Palm City, FL and Holly Rossi of Palm City, FL, a sister Constance Drialo of Malvern, PA, also grandchildren Justin Reffner and Ian Reffner of Port St. Lucie, FL, Emily Reich and Kyle Reich of Sewall's Point, FL, and great-grandchildren Jaylee, Jordyn and Aria Reffner of Port St. Lucie, FL.

He was predeceased by a daughter Joy Rossi Reich, and brothers James Rossi and Richard Rossi.

Dr. Rossi was born on May 21, 1930, in Philadelphia, PA to Herman J. Rossi and Julia Clare Rossi. He was the youngest of three brothers and a younger sister. At age 9, his family moved to Atco, AJ. He attended the Atco Public Schools and graduated from Overbrook Regional High School. In high school, he was active in dramatics and was inducted into the National Thespian Society and selected by his classmates as the most outstanding actor of his class. He also won a state wrestling championship his senior year. Dr. Rossi went on to Temple University where he earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Education in 1953, his Master of Education degree in 1954, majoring in Counseling and Guidance, and his Doctor of Education degree in 1972.

He began his teaching career at this alma mater, Overbrook Regional High School and quickly assumed a supervisory position. In 1954, in addition to his teaching duties, was appointed Director of Adult Education and also as a part-time counselor. In 1957, he was appointed Chairperson of the Business Education Department. In 1959, he was appointed Assistant Principal. In 1960, he left Overbrook to become Assistant to the Superintendent in charge of student services and activities for the Northern Burlington Regional High School District located in Columbus, NJ. After serving four years at Northern Burlington, he was appointed by Haddon Township School District in Westmont, NJ as Principal and remained in that position until 1982.

During the 29 years, he was an educator in New Jersey, he served in many leadership positions for numerous educational organizations. Dr. Rossi was President of the Overbrook Regional Teachers Association, President of the Camden County Business Education Association, Executive Committee member of the New Jersey Business Education Association, President of the Camden County Principals Association and a member of the Executive Committee of the Middle States Association of High Schools and Colleges. He was invited to serve as a visiting school Chairperson by the Middle States Association to evaluate high schools in New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware, and Washington, D.C. on thirteen occasions. Also, during his tenure in New Jersey, he was an adjunct Professor at graduate schools at Rutgers University, and Rider University where he taught courses in educational administration and guidance.

In 1982 he relocated to Stuart, FL and assumed the position of Coordinator of a new off-campus program for Barry University. The program offered upper-division courses leading to a Bachelor's Degree at the Indian River Community College campuses in Stuart, Fort Pierce, and Vero Beach. He served in that position for two years and then was offered the position as Executive director of Futures Curriculum Project which was part of a national grant of ten school districts in the United States. After completing that project, he remained with the Martin County School district as a member of the Student Services Department at South Fork High School. During his tenure at South Fork, he served on a number of occasions as Chairperson of evaluation committees for the Southern Association of Schools and Colleges. He also served as an adjunct instructor for Barry University and Indian River Community College.

Educators in both New Jersey and Florida who are knowledgeable about Dr. Rossi's contributions to education have recognized that his leadership skills and accomplishments have served the school districts well in which he was employed. He knew how to utilize his staff members to work in a democratic and cooperative atmosphere. He led Haddon Township High School from the first year it had a graduating class in 1965 until 1982 to become one of the finest academic high schools in the state of New Jersey. The state's assessment testing results, its SAT scores, and National Merit Test finalists consistently produced student results at an extremely high level. Until the present time, the school is still ranked in the top ten to fifteen percent of all New Jersey high schools.

Dr. Rossi met his wife Ruth Volz at a high school dance when they were teenagers. They married in 1954 and moved to Medford Lakes, NJ in 1957. They raised their three daughters there at which time Ruth went back to school to complete her Bachelors of Arts degree in Elementary Education and her Master of Arts degree at Rowan University. She went on to teach elementary school for 17 years in New Jersey and Florida before retiring.

After spending ten years at South Fork, Dr. Rossi retired and spent his time playing golf and traveling extensively through Europe, the Canadian Maritimes and Rockies, and throughout the United States especially Maine. He was a member of Monarch Country Club and Hammock Creek Country Club. He also served several community agencies such as Crises Line of Martin County. He was responsible for the development of the application to become an approved United Way Agency. He served on the executive committee for Safe Space of the Treasure Coast, also, he served as a member of the Board of Directors for the Martin County Credit Union for more than 20 years. He was also an officer and member of the executive board for the 4-C's Club Caring Children/Clothing Children. He was responsible for establishing the setting up of children's clothing bins at many of the Martin County schools to collect clothing for needy children.

Funeral arrangements will be handled by Forest Hills Funeral Home of Palm City, FL. Visitation will be Tuesday, March 10th from 6:00-8:00 pm. A funeral mass will be held at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Stuart, FL Wednesday, March 11th at 10:00 am. Interment will follow at Forest Hills Cemetery.
