At family gatherings, when Ash and Norma were surrounded by their large often boisterous family, Ash liked to say none of this would have been possible but for a pair of roller skates. Ash met Norma at a San Diego roller rink and it didn't take too many laps around the rink for Ash to propose. They were married on January 18, 1941. For all 66 years of their marriage they lived in Pacific Beach in the home they built together. It was often filled with loving friends, neighbors, children and grandchildren.
Ash's hobby was restoring antique cars and he was an active member of the Horseless Carriage Club, the Model T Club, and the Plymouth Club. He loved touring the back county in one of his many restored cars with Norma and special friends. He served as president of the San Diego chapter of the Horseless Carriage Club in 1970 and received the Marian Welch Service Award from the national Horseless Carriage Club.
Never reticent to discuss old cars he received calls from throughout the county related to restoring and repairing Motel T cars. In fact many of his friends called him "Mr. T."
Ash is survived by his wife Norma, sons Ashley and Charles, daughter Kathleen and seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and good friend.
Services will be at the El Camino Memorial Pacific Beach Chapel on Thurs, Jan 11 at 12pm (noon) followed by committal at Camino Memorial Park. There will be a viewing on Jan 10 from 4-7pm. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to a favorite charity. Published in U-T San Diego on Jan. 9, 2007
