A native of Richmond, Mrs Alsop was well-known for her interest in civics and public relations. She was the daughter of Willis Clyde Locker and Mary Augusta Bowles. After graduating from St Catherine's, she attended Vassar College and graduated in 1937. She moved to New York City where she became a model at the John Robert Powers Agency and was named by its founder as the agency's first director. She was a popular public speaker, journalist, radio show guest and PR consultant.

During World War II, she worked for the USO and the war bond drive, and she was an impressive fundraiser for other war benefit programs.

Later, she became the Executive Assistant of actress Helen Hayes. That was the start of a lifelong friendship between the two. She returned to Richmond, and in 1953 she married Mr Benjamin Pollard Alsop, Jr.

In 1956 she was named by President Dwight Eisenhower to the Woodrow Wilson Centennial Celebration Commission. She edited The Greatness of Woodrow Wilson and dedicated the biography to her brother, Corporal Willis Clyde Locker, Jr. He was a decorated soldier who was killed in action during World War II.

Mrs Alsop was appointed to the Virginia Historic Landmarks Commission, was chairman of Historic Jamestown, and she has served on countless commissions, boards and committees. Virginia history was a passion. Her latest initiative was the proposal of a monument at the State Capitol honoring the contributions of Virginia women. The General Assembly approved the proposal in 2010, and Mrs Alsop had been an active member of the Commission.
