D/o Burton & Mary Ann∼Sharon Holmes, age 16, was visiting Oscar Scherer State Park, in Sarasota, Florida with her family. At dusk, tragedy struck, when young Sharon went swimming, an 11'3" (3.4 m) male alligator grabbed her and dragged her, with Sharon's father trying to no avail to free his daughter from the jaws of the alligator. Cause of Death: drowned and other injuries caused by the alligator. This was the first recorded alligator attack causing a fatality in the United States.
