John Barnicoat Sarvis was the son of George Sarvis and Emma Barnicoat. John migrated with his parents from England to Quebec, then Ohio, in 1849. He married Harriett Beal on November 28, 1860, in Cuyahoga County, Ohio. They had four children who survived to adulthood: John A., Fred, Eva, and William. Their daughter, Onee Sarvis, was born in 1873 but died a month later, in Mark Center, Ohio. Another daughter, Sarah Sarvis, died October 15, 1874, single. No burial record has been found for Onee or Sarah.

Also, Woodland Cemetery in Cleveland indicates a stillborn "female child of Jonathan B. Sarvis," name unknown, was buried in the Sarvis plot on January 30, 1870. Section 30, Lot 49, Grave 1 (shared with John's mother, Emma Barnicoat Sarvis).
