During World War II, Vernon served in the U.S. Army in France and Germany. He received the Purple Heart with Oak Leaf Cluster and the Bronze Star before being honorably discharged due to wounds received.
He married Dena Visker in 1947 in Mexico. The couple resided in Los Angeles for many years where Vernon worked as an inspector for the Southern Pacific Railroad and McLellan Field. In 1957, they moved to Warden and farmed until retiring and moving to Moses Lake in 1989.
Vernon was a devoted husband to Dena and a favored uncle to three generations of nieces and nephews. Besides his loving wife of 60 years, he is survived by brother Heinz of Yuma, Ariz.; sisters, Louise Brown and Kate Morris, both of Roseville, Calif.; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers George, Henry and Fred; and sister, Charlotte Neigh.
