Emigrated from Scotland to Virginia before August 1, 1715, when he was a witness to a deed in Henrico Co. Assuming he was over 21 at that time, it is assumed he was born circa 1690.

John Syme was appointed by the Governor of Virginia as a surveyor for New Kent Co. in 1717, and for Hanover Co. in 1722. He was elected to the Viginia House of Burgesses from Hanover Co. in 1722, and served for 10 years until his death. He was also elected a vestryman of St. Paul's Parish in Hanover Co. in 1729.

Syme was granted and purchased thousands of acres of land in several counties. This included 22,000 acres patented in Hanover Co., including Studley Plantation where he built his home. He is presumed to be buried there.

He first married Margaret Dansie, widow of Capt. John Geddes of James City Co., shortly after Geddes died, after March 1720. Margaret Dansie Geddes Syme died in 1728 with no children by John Syme.

He secondly married Sarah Winston, the daughter of Capt. Isaac Winston, Sr. and Mary Dabney, in 1728. They had one son, John Syme II, before John Syme I died, between 17 March 1731/1732 and 11 April 1732. Sarah Winston Syme secondly married John Henry in 1733, and their second child was Patrick Henry.
