Alton Donald Greenway, Sr., of Macon, died on Friday, March 13, 2015. Memorial services will be held at 3:00PM on Monday, March 16, 2015, at Mulberry Street United Methodist Church with the Reverend Tommy Mason officiating. Family will greet friends from 1:30PM to 3:00PM in the parlor. Burial will follow at Riverside Cemetery.
Alton Donald Greenway, Sr. was born on October 22, 1929 in Garfield, Georgia. He was the son of Eustace Alton Greenway and Anna Underwood Greenway, both deceased. He graduated from Sandersville Georgia High School in 1946 and from the University of Georgia’s School of Pharmacy in 1951 with a BSPH Degree. He served in the United States Army during the Korean War from 9/21/53 – 9/20/55.
Mr. Greenway lived in Macon from 1956 and had been semi-retired since 1999. For 23 years he was the co-owner of Chi Chester’s Ingleside Pharmacy and the owner for 21 years. He was past president of Middle Georgia Pharmaceutical Association and the 6th District Association, President of the Georgia Pharmacy Association in 1973-1974, and the winner of the Bowl of Hygeia for Community Service from the B.H. Robins Company in 1974. He was a member of UGA School of Pharmacy Vision-plus committee, and in 1988 received the distinguished Alumni Award from the University of Georgia’s School of Pharmacy.
Mr. Greenway was a member of Ingleside Lions Club for 7 years, the Macon-Bibb County Board of Health for 26 years, the Macon Touchdown since 1965, the Gridiron Secret Society Club at the University of Georgia, and the UGA Heritage Society. In 1976 he was President of the Macon Middle Georgia Bulldog Club. He was past president of the Macon-Bibb County Mental Health Association and past president of the Macon-Bibb County Council on Drugs.
Mr. Greenway was a member of Mulberry Street United Methodist Church and a member of the Joy Class. He was predeceased by his first wife, Carmen Isern Greenway in 1982, and is survived by his children, Dr. Lynda Kay “Katie” Myers (Tom), Carmen Luann Murvin, and Alton D. Greenway, Jr.; three grandchildren, Carmen A. Greenway, Larsen and Madison Murvin. He is survived by his second wife, Shirley Council Greenway; six stepchildren, Dr. Dennis R. Smith (Tina), Dr. Shawn G. Scott (Ashley), Bryan D. Scott (Julie), Leigh Scott, Cliff Scott (Aurora), and Steve Scott (Sheila); and step grandchildren, Tripp Smith, Jenna Renfroe (Daniel), Logan Smith, Tanner Scott, Baylor Scott, Myra Jane Scott, Carson Scott, Avery Scott, Brynn Scott, Asa Scott, Clay Scott, Brett Scott, Tiffany Brooker (Kevin), Stuart Scott, and Dustin Scott. He is also survived by his sister, Gloria Greenway Josey, of Sandersville and her children, Connie Daniels (Charles), Eddie Josey (Nancy), and Randy Josey (Tamara), all of whom he considered a close part of his family. He will be missed by his family as well as his many close friends.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Methodist Home for Children in Macon or Mulberry Street Outreach.
