Alice 'Maude' Sayles Davis was cremated upon her death in 1964. Her ashes were never picked up from Barrick Funeral Home in Salem and sat on a shelf there until 1988. That
year I, (Roger D. Courser), started my family seach, starting with her. After a thorough search of the surrounding cemetaries, I started calling the funeral homes. Barrick affirmed that they had done the funeral and cremation and that her ashes were still there due to a law that forbade them from getting rid of them. I claimed her ashes, which were in a 4x4 cardboard box, covered in brown paper and tied with twine. On top of the box was her wishes to have her ashes scattered over the grave of her Grandmother, Mahalath Richmond at the IOOF Cemetary in Salem. By this time the act of scattering ashes was forbidden, and the cost to dig a small deep hole was $700. So instead of scattering them there, she was layed to rest at the feet of her son in law, Calvin Thomas, at the Lee Mission Cemetary on D street in Salem, OR.
