Asher F. Banning, 90, of Main Street, passed away Monday, March 16, 2015, at his residence.
He was born Nov. 8, 1924, in Lavelle, a son of the late Frank and Jen (Shields) Banning.
He graduated from Butler Township High School.
Asher was a U.S. Marine veteran, serving in World War II in Hiroshima. The pride and joy of his life was being able to see the airplane he worked on during the war flying overhead many years after the war ended. He also took part in carrying the wreath to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.
He married Marlene Banning, of Lavelle, who survives.
He worked for many years at Standard Press Steel, Jenkintown, and later for Schuylkill Intermediate Unit 29.
He was a member of Ashland Lodge 294 F&AM and the Caldwell Consistory, Bloomsburg.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing and playing cards.
In addition to his wife, Marlene, Asher is survived by several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Lester and Russell Banning; and two sisters, Betty Troup and Ruth Hummel.
A funeral service was held at the Lavelle Church of the Nazarene, Lavelle, with The Rev. Jeremy Smallwood officiating. Interment was in Citizens Cemetery, Lavelle. The Kull-Heizenroth Funeral Home, Ashland, had charge of the arrangements.
