Charlene Louise (Safford) BAILEY transitioned out of this life on March 8 at Good Samaritan Retirement Village of Fort Collins where she had been a resident since 2006.
Charlene was born to Charles W. and Louise (Fellows) Safford on Oct. 20, 1916, near Tiosa in Fulton County. She graduated from Talma High School and earned an elementary teacher's certificate at Central Normal College. She taught elementary classes at Talma School, Hosford Park, Grass Creek, and Caston in Indiana. After marrying Earl Joseph Bailey in 1943 she and her family made their home in the vicinity of Rochester until she moved to Fort Collins, Colo., in 1993. Her hobbies included reading, needlework, photography, travel and solving the daily crosswords. She was a member of the American Baptist Church, Fort Collins, its fellowship class, friendship circle, and calling and prayer circles and taught Sunday school classes. She was a member of the Good Samaritan Auxiliary and a Poudre Valley Hospital volunteer where she made numerous crocheted caps for babies. Charlene was an active member of Church Women United for which she received special recognition for service in 2009.
Before relocating, she was a member of the Rochester First Baptist Church; Rochester Women's Club; Mount Zion Club, for which she served as treasurer; Rochester Optimist; Women's Christian Temperance Union; Church Women United; and Indiana State Retired Teachers' Association, for which she founded the Fulton County chapter and served as president. She also was a receptionist in the chiropractic office of Aaron Blossom, D.C., in Rochester.
She was especially proud of her work in improving people's lives through founding the Fulton County Literacy Coalition and teaching reading to several adult students.
Charlene was preceded in death by husband Earl Joseph, her parents, sister Stella Catherine, and brothers Walter B., Donald E. and Albert E. Safford. She is survived by her sister, Christine A. King; sons Harold, Richard and Ralph; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday at the First Baptist Church in Rochester.
