Her parents were Jakob G "Hans" Blum and Waranna Ruth Blaisdell.
Melanie was raised in the Almaden Valley with her older siblings John and Carole. She attended Bret Harte Jr High and Leland High School in San Jose. In school she was always involved in the arts. Her sister sang professionally and she grew up in a home where music was at the heart of the home and it remained so throughout her life, and also has become an important part of her son's lives.

Melanie loved learning about her family and her ancestors and was always in awe of her talented older siblings. She loved her aunts and uncles and cousins and looked forward to any opportunity to see them. She attended San Jose City College. In her career she worked as a dance instructor, administrative assistant, and worked for United Technologies Chemical Systems Division in South San Jose for over a decade, where she met her husband. After her son's were born, she worked as a substitute teacher (including ESL classes) and as a contract admin at companies like Intel.

Her pride and joy was raising her two wonderful sons, Daniel and Nicholas with her husband Gary. She also was stepmother to Gary's amazing son Alex.

"Mellie" was passionate about all the arts and volunteered for many events in her community. She would break out in song and sing musical's whenever the mood struck. Her rendition of "Trouble in the City" from the Music Man always entertained us and made us smile. But she also enjoyed doing impersonations of cartoon characters, like Foghorn E Leghorn for our amusement. She dances in countless performances throughout school, church and local dance troupes, including a tour in Europe. She also taught dance in local colleges and parks and rec summer programs. She became involved with the non-profit "Stories for Service" with her son Nicholas, that records stories of veterans and considered herself a patriot.

She reconnected to her faith in the 1970's and was an active member of Calvary Community Church and the Home Church in San Jose.

She is now with her sister Carole, her husband Gary and step-son Alex, and her parents in heaven. She leaves her brother John, sons Nicholas (San Jose) and Daniel (Germany), daughter-in-law Tina, grandson's Gideon and Gavin, granddaughter Louisa, niece Pamela and her many beloved cousins; along with her lifelong friends too numerous to list.
