Mr. Messenger was born in the Middlewell community near Channing, Texas. He graduated from Dumas High School at Dumas, Texas, and attended West Texas State College at Canyon, Texas. He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II in the Marshall Islands. He was a retired firefighter with N.I.N.A.S. at the Marine Base in San Diego.
Survivors include four sisters, Marcialete Ledgerwood of Dumas, Polly Goettsche of Higgins, Texas, Virginia Frasier of Amarillo and Beverly Barber of Kerrville, Texas; and two brothers, Pat Messenger of Amarillo and Neil Messenger of Garden City, Kan.
