Mildred K. Olsen
Dunn County News, Wednesday, July 17, 2001, A6

Mildred K. Olsen, age 94, formerly of Menomonie, died Saturday, July 13, 2002, at Oakwood Villa Nursing Home in Altoona.

Mildred Lucille Keil was born March 30, 1908, in Elgin, Ill., to Wilhelmina (Zellmer) and Charles Richard Keil.

On the advice of a favorite high school teacher, she attended Wooster College in Wooster, Ohio, and received her bachelor's degree in English and speech in 1929. She went on to earn her master's degree in English at Northwestern University in 1930 and began a long teaching career.

She married Kay Theodore (K.T.) Olsen in a rose garden ceremony on June 10, 1933, on the Iowa State campus in Ames, and lived in Fort Dodge and Des Moines before moving to Menomonie in 1947. Together, they had two children, Dennis and Virginia, while living in Iowa, and later welcomed two adopted children, Joseph and Emilie, into their family in Menomonie.

Mildred influenced many children and young adults during her teaching career, which included public elementary and high schools in Fort Dodge and Menomonie, and also at the University of Wisconsin-Stout. She was an avid reader and writer, always interested in words and ideas.

She enjoyed active participation in PEO, UW-Stout Faculty Wives, and Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Menomonie. Gardening and bridge playing were two favorite activities.

She is survived by daughters Virginia (Lee) Molgaard of Ames, Iowa, and Emilie (Loren) Anderson of Eau Claire, and son Joseph (Judy) Olsen of Independence, Iowa; 10 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Mildred was preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Pearl; her husband, Kay T.; and her son, Dunnis, and daughter-in-law, Kathleen.

Memorial services are 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, July 20, 2002, at Oakwood Villa Nursing Home's chapel, 2512 New Pine Drive, Altoona, with Pastor John Hosmann officiating. Private family interment.
The Cremation Society of Wisconsin is serving the family.
