Ben's wife, Ellen Mullane Benning, is buried in St. Ambrose, with her parents in block 5 lot 56. She is listed on the large family stone, plus a footstone with
"Ellen". Ben had 2 other siblings besides Mary. His oldest brother, J.H., or John is buried in this family plot, FAG 71234037. He was a farmer, and was single. There was also a brother, James Clark Benning, who is buried in a Norwalk cemetery, FAG 97183439. He was married to Harriett "Hattie" Geraldine Bates, and had 2 or 3 children. He was also a farmer. In researching this family, what impressed me was their devotion to each other. The parents immigrated from Ireland during a famine which was starving families to death. There were no jobs, and no way to have and support a family without taking a risk by leaving their homeland for a foreign country. Iowa was just being settled in the 1850's, and great farmland available for hardworking people. James and his family were members of the St. Ambrose parish, which was composed of immigrant families predominately from Ireland and Italy. That became their supportive community and family. His sons learned to farm, and all became farmers. Unfortunately, Ben's wife and child died in childbirth. I'm sure that was heartbreaking for him, losing his wife and child at what should have been a wonderful time. His remaining single told me how hard this time was for him. May they all rest in eternal peace together.
--------------------------------
Benjamin was married to a woman named Ellen, who was listed in an old St. Ambrose Burial record found at the genealogical society. She was born in Iowa in 1866, and died Oct. 13, 1895, at the age of 23 during childbirth. As the child isn't recorded after that, I assume the child also died. In subsequent census reports, Ben was listed as being a widower, without children. Like his father, he was also a farmer. In further research in Ancestry, he as a Pvt. in the Spanish American War when he was 37 yrs. old.
