A beautiful young woman and cloak model, Ethel was born to William and Frances (Riblet) Ferver. At a young age she married James Herbert Gibson; they later divorced. She had lost her father as a girl and was trying to support her mother and herself by working as a bookkeeper for a doctor, with whom she became involved in a romantic relationship--until a bounced check caused the doctor to accuse her of stealing from his bank account. When he went to the police, she went home, buying a pistol on the way. She wrote letters to her mother and her sweetheart-doctor, and then shot herself.
