George W. Crabtree, 78, Springfield, Mo., passed away at 11:43 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 5, 2003, in Cox North. He was born Feb. 25, 1925, in Carrollton, Ill., the son of Harley Chester and Faye Isabelle Voiles Crabtree. He was a member of the 112th Sea Bees Construction Battalion and served 21 months in the South Pacific Theatre during World War II. After returning from military service, George graduated from the University of Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy in 1950. In 1953, he joined Frisco Railroad as a mechanical engineer, and moved to Springfield. He was noted for his assignment as design engineer for the TriLevel Automobile Carriers that Frisco developed in the 1960s. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Elaine Crabtree, of the home; a daughter and her husband, Cira Susan and Thomas Wright, St. Joseph, Mo.; and four grandchildren, Ian and Samuel Link, and Sally and Winifred Wright. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 8, 2003, in Christ Episcopal Church with the Rev. Kenneth L. Chumbley officiating under the direction of Gorman-Scharpf Brentwood Chapel. Burial with masonic rites will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be from 6:30 to 8 p.m. today in the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Disabled American Veterans, 1711 N. National, Springfield, MO 65803, or the American Cancer Society, 3322-R S. Campbell, Springfield, MO 65807.
