Funeral services for Julius Leon Bennett Sr., of San Benito, TX are at Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Mont Meta Memorial Park. Visitation is at the funeral home.

Mr. Bennett, 88, passed away March 19, 2015 and was born June 16, 1926 to Leonard Becton and Lola Belle Dear Bennett in Pearl Community, MS.

Mr. Bennett enlisted in the Marines June 29, 1943 and served to September 11, 1945. He saw action in Saipan and Tinian Islands. He received two Purple Hearts for his wounds in these campaigns.

He married Theresa Conrad while in service and returned to Mississippi after service. He started as a yard worker for Rocket Manufacture ring in Jackson, MS thru hard work and self-education; he became a certified Welder and Machinist. He became Forman and later became President of the Company and was respected by his peers in the industry.

He was talented wood craftsman. He built a 33 foot houseboat in his backyard. He also made guitars, which some of the finest guitarist in Nashville have played. He also repaired guitars, fiddles and banjos.

His hobbies were hunting and fishing as well playing music. He could play guitars, Steele Guitars, banjos, mandolins, key board, clarinets, saxophone, and trumpets.

Preceding him in death was his mother and father. Also preceding him are his sisters, Ethel Maye Byrd, Ada Belle Conrad, Rosella Berry and his Son Charles Leonard Bennett.

Survivors are his wife, Patricia Pugh Bennett and her daughter, Dianne Becker and husband Don, of San Benito; a daughter Betty Ann Carter and Husband Lewis, and two granddaughters, Christa and Kelly of Plymouth, MN; a son Julius Leon Bennett Jr. and wife Becky and grandson John of Brookhaven, MS and granddaughter Shannon Dionne Bennett of Washington DC. He is also survived by a brother James David Bennett and wife Glenda of Hartford, AL and his sons Christopher James and Daryl Gordon of Eufaula, AL; a daughter-in-law Beth Bennett and grandson Charles Robert Bennett and wife Laura and great-granddaughter, Ashley of Yukon and Mewalla, OK; and many nieces and nephews in MS and AL.
