Ray D. Eicher, 50, purchasing agent for the city of East Cleveland the last 18 years, died yesterday at Marine Hospital, where he had been a patient a day and a half.

Mr. Eicher who resided at 15801 Hazel Road, East Cleveland, had been failing health about two years.

He was a native of Ironton, O. He came to Cleveland about 22 years ago, after his term of army service in the first World War. He attended Spencerian Business College here and immediately after his graduation was appointed purchasing agent for East Cleveland, the position he held until his death.

Charles A. Carran, city manager of East Cleveland, last night spoke of Mr. Eicher's death as a loss to the suburb's city hall staff.

"He was a devoted public servant," said Mr. Carran, "who will be missed in the office where he gave so many years as a capable, faithful employee."

Mr. Eicher was well-known in Masonic circles. He also belonged to East Cleveland Post of the American Legion.

Surviving him his wife, Lorena L.; four children, Elaine, Pvt. Ray D., jr., now believed to be on his way overseas, Barbara and James; his mother, Mrs. Flora N. Haley of Ironton, and two brothers, Charles W, of Dayton and Thomas H. of Ironton.

Services will be held at 3 p.m. Friday at the Merle Owen funeral home, 16049 Euclid Avenue, East Cleveland.
