Sydney Gross, age 96, of Osceola, Iowa died Tuesday, July 20, 2010 at Southern Hills Specialty Care in Osceola, Iowa.

Sydney, born February 20, 1914 near Creston, Iowa, was the son of Anderson M. Gross and Ada F. (Royce) Gross. While still a baby, he moved with his parents to their farm a mile south of Arispe, Iowa. He attended the Arispe School - graduating at age 16 in 1930. After his father died in 1927, he continued to help care for the farm until 1933.In 1934, he rented a farm from his uncle near Malcolm, Iowa. On December 24, 1936 he was united in marriage to Catherine Ione Dew at Creston, Iowa.

In 1943, they moved to their own farm near Beaman, Iowa. While in Beaman, Sydney served on the local school board. In 1955, they moved to their present farm west of Osceola, Iowa. Sydney served on the Federal Land Bank board at Creston, Iowa, and the state F.H.A. advisory board. Except for six years, while Sydney served as President of Iowa Farmer's Union, this farm was their home until retiring to a house they had built in Osceola, Iowa in 1982.At heart, Sydney was always interested in politics, and was an old-fashioned farmer who loved his livestock, family, and country. Among his fondest memories were those of showing his polled purebred registered Hereford bulls at the Kansas City Royal and the Denver Livestock shows. Other fond memories included winning shuffleboard tournaments across the Phoenix, Arizona valley while he and Catherine spent their winters in retirement in Mesa, Arizona.

Those left to honor his memory include two children - Joanne Marie Dinville of Ankeny, Iowa and Arleen Phyllis (Ronald) Vander Ploeg of Prairie City, Iowa; six grandchildren - De Anne Marie (Bob) O'Brien of Colmer, Pennsylvania, Dana Lynn (Bruce) Posey of Redwood City, California, Kimberly Ann (Jens) Jensen of Georgetown, Texas, Kevin Royce (Darah) Gross of Charlotte, North Carolina, Alan Dale (Merri) Vander Ploeg of Stafford, Virginia, and David Martin Dinville of Sun City West, Arizona; and seven great-grandchildren - Samuel Royce Gross, Andrew Tyler O'Brien, Katherine Grace O'Brien, Alexa Lynn Posey, Reese Keith Posey, Dylan Ray Vander Ploeg, and Wendy Marie Vander Ploeg.Preceding Sydney in death were his parents, his wife, his son George Royce Gross and his wife Jean Ann (Watson) Gross, two sisters - Marie Ruhl, Lillian Underwood, six brothers - Harold (H.R.) Gross, Lester Gross, Ernest Gross, Alton Gross, Luin (Elton) Gross, and an unnamed infant brother.
