MOUNT AIRY, NC ~ Mrs. Mary Ellen Flippen Key, 98, of 335 Gravely St., Mt. Airy, the widow of the late John Henry Key, passed away on Friday, June 14, 1996, at Evangeline of King in King, N.C.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Sunday, June 16, 1996, at the Laurel Springs Primitive Baptist Church, conducted by Elder Larry Crotts and the Rev. Trent Lyons. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Key was born in Surry County on Sept. 11, 1897, the daughter of the late Joseph Taylor and Dale Pinnie Elizabeth Flippen.

She was a homemaker and a member of the Laurel Springs Primitive Baptist Church.

Surviving is two daughters and son-in-law: Stella Hensley of the home, and Annie and Benton Hensley of Mt. Airy; three sons and daughters-in-law: Charles W. and Virginia Key of Eden, George A. and Ila Key of Greensboro, James O. and Geneva Key of Dobson; 13 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and 1 great-great-grandchild; three sisters: Annie Beasley, Lillie Beasley, and Virginia Hill, all of Mt. Airy.

In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Key was preceded in death by a son, Jessie Ray Key; three sisters: Marthie Williams, Susie Dawson, Mertis Arrington; three brothers: Sam Flippen, Otis Flippen, and Curtis Flippen.

The family will receive friends on Saturday night from 7-9 p.m. at Moody Funeral Home in Mt. Airy where her body will remain until taken to the church to lie in state 30 minutes before the service.
