The daughter of C. Verne Martin and Clara Ellen Wadmans Martin of Toledo, OH. She attended DeVeaux and graduated from DeVilbiss High School in 1937 and graduated from business college in 1939. She married Walter R. Adkins Oct. 12, 1940. This was the start of a 50 year business career for Dorothy, as she and her husband owned Adkins market on Douglas Road in West Toledo, for eight years, then went into real estate. During this time, she and Walter raised 8 children.

She was a lifetime parishioner of St. Andrew's Episcopal Church of Toledo, was an accomplished ballroom dancer, bridge player, and was involved in Eastern Star and the Maumee Elks Lodge.

She was predeceased by her husband Walter (1995), her sister, Virgina Wiltse (2003), also buried here, her parents, and an infant son, Joseph (1963).

She is survived by children, Merrilee A. Zawadski, Canton, MI; Karen J. Turner, Maumee, OH; Thomas W. Adkins, Toledo, OH; James M. Adkins, Palm Beach Gardens, FL; Richard V. Adkins; Green Acres, FL; Beth E. Myers, Columbia, SC; and David R. Adkins, Sylvania, OH, 15 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.
