He grew up and attended local Catholic Schools. He was a United States Army combat veteran of the Korean War. He was a graduate of the NH Technical Institute He was a machinist for Lockheed Sanders for 32 years and was a deep sea diver for Sanders at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard.
He was predeceased by four brothers, Albert Martel, Andrew Martel, Leo Martel and Wilfred Martel, and by three sisters, Theresa Taylor, Constance Landry, and Justine Rowe.
