She attended Morris Harvey and WV State College. She was a founding member of Highlawn Baptist Church, St. Albans where she played the organ for over 4 decades. An active member of the Women's Club for over 60 years she was also a member of the Homemakers and Mary Gray Circle. With a passion of quilting, she taught for many years through the adult education program at St. Albans High School and the Pearl Buck House in Hillsboro, WV. Her quilts have won many awards over the years. She was married to Lionel M. Gray (died 1985) in 1934. They had two children, Sharon Lynn Gray Cogar (1940-1989) and Lionel M. (Mac) Gray, Jr. (1944-)
