Eldest of seven children born to Monroe County natives Tabor Hiram Colvin and Elizabeth Deming, Varnum first married Harriet Tallman with whom he had one son, Frank Reginald, b. 16 Jul 1862, d. 9 May 1902. This marriage ended in divorce, and Varnum wed second Mary J. Martin in Rochester 29 Sep 1903.

Often referred by newspapers to as Professor V. M. Colvin in deference to his position as a Rochester school principal and occasionally as Brother V. M. Colvin in stories related to his Masonic Lodge activities, he also has been misidentified by record keepers as Verne.

Although an obituary for Varnum has not been found in Monroe County papers, the Cemetery records indicate he died in the Monroe County Hospital, Rochester, Monroe Co., NY.
