This marriage ended in divorce, and Varnum wed second Mary J. Martin in Rochester 29 Sep 1903.
Often referred by newspapers to as Professor V. M. Colvin in deference to his position as a Rochester school principal and occasionally as Brother V. M. Colvin in stories related to his Masonic Lodge activities, he also has been misidentified by record keepers as Verne.
